Early Childhood Screening

Dear Teachers,

With the announcement of BC's Early Hearing Program (EHP), it will be possible to screen newborns in the province for hearing loss and to make possible early and appropriate intervention that will promote the development of children who are deaf and hard of hearing in BC. The Data/Outcomes and Evaluation Working Group, a subcommittee of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Committee of BC (EHDI-BC), is working to develop a 1) newborn hearing screening information system and 2) a provincial hearing loss registry.

The information system(s) will enable the tracking of programs and services utilized by families of children who are deaf and hard of hearing and allow for users of the system, such as audiologists, technicians, teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, and early intervention professionals to obtain ongoing and updated information about the incidence of hearing loss at local, regional, and provincial levels and to monitor the short- and long-term developmental outcomes of children with hearing loss. This information can help to coordinate the work of the diverse groups of individuals who are involved in promoting the development of deaf and hard of hearing children in BC. This information can also be utilized to assist in program planning and can help to inform the work of policy-makers in terms of determining the services needed for deaf and hard of hearing children and their families.

The Data/Outcomes and Evaluation Working Group is asking for your help in providing us with information about your current information system, as well as your wishes and needs for a provincial hearing loss registry. We are asking that you please take a few minutes to complete a short, 2-page questionnaire and e-mail btpoon@interchange.ubc.ca or fax (604.822.0640) it to Brenda Poon by Wednesday, June 15th, 2005. The questionnaire will be sent to you today in a follow-up e-mail message.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Brenda Poon by telephone (voice: 604-822-3560) or e-mail (btpoon@interchange.ubc.ca).

Many thanks for your help

Question
Our district is considering the purchase of an IEP program. Does your district have one? Is it useful? Can anyone recommend IEP Central?
